Middle Office

Definition

The middle office is the operations function between trading and accounting that captures, enriches, confirms and reconciles trades and manages positions and data.

The middle office sits between the front office (portfolio managers and traders) and the back office (accounting, settlement and administration). Typical responsibilities include trade capture and enrichment, trade confirmation and affirmation, IBOR maintenance, daily position and cash reconciliation, P&L validation, corporate actions processing, collateral and margin support, and security master maintenance.

The middle office matters because it is where trade-level errors are cheapest to fix. A trade break caught on trade date can be corrected with the broker before settlement; the same error discovered at month-end may already have caused a settlement fail, a wrong NAV and a cash shortfall.

Pitfalls include unclear handoffs with the back office, reliance on spreadsheets for trade enrichment, and a lack of break-aging and escalation. Managers increasingly outsource middle-office functions to specialist teams while keeping data in their own systems.
