Fund of funds accounting built around lagged data and look-through

A fund of funds depends on information it does not control. Fundtec collects, validates and books underlying fund data so your NAV and investor reports stay accurate and explainable.

In one minute

What

Fund of funds accounting records a vehicle’s investments in other funds and turns underlying capital statements, estimates and final NAVs into its own NAV and investor reports. It covers look-through exposure, unfunded commitments and estimate-to-final adjustments. Fundtec provides fund of funds accounting, data collection and reconciliation for multi-manager vehicles, allocators and family offices, on Tychi or the client’s systems.

Who it’s for

Managers running this strategy who want administration and operations that already understand its accounting, valuation and investor-reporting demands.

What happens first

A 30-minute scoping call, then a written plan: scope, the transition timeline and indicative pricing. No generic proposal.

Why fund of funds operations are different

A fund of funds cannot strike its NAV from market prices. It relies on statements from each underlying manager, which arrive on different dates, in different formats and at different levels of finality. Hedge fund underlyings may report an estimate within days and a final later; private fund underlyings often report a quarter in arrears.

The operating task is to collect that information on a schedule, validate it, book it consistently and explain every movement to investors and auditors. Fundtec runs a documented document-collection process, logs every estimate and final, and keeps a clear record of which NAV each figure came from. The same discipline applies whether the underlying portfolio is ten funds or two hundred, and whether the vehicle is a commingled fund, a feeder fund or a family office allocation program.

Fund of funds operations we cover

  1. 01

    Underlying capital statements

Collection from administrator portals and email, validation against prior periods and booking to each investment record.

  2. 02

    Estimates versus finals

Estimated NAVs booked for timely reporting, then replaced by finals with the difference tracked and explained.

  3. 03

    Lagged NAVs

Roll-forward of lagged private fund values for calls, distributions and known events, under the manager’s policy.

  4. 04

    Unfunded commitments

Commitment, called and unfunded balances by underlying fund, with call and distribution forecasts for liquidity planning.

  5. 05

    Look-through reporting

Exposure by strategy, sector, geography and manager, built from underlying fund reports where data is available.

  6. 06

    Fee and expense tracking

Underlying management and incentive fees captured from statements for total-cost disclosure to investors.

Every figure traced to a source document

Each underlying value in the fund of funds NAV links to the statement, estimate or roll-forward it came from, and each capital call links to its notice and wire. That evidence trail is what turns a quarter-end audit support request from a scramble into a download.

Frequently asked questions

How does a fund of funds handle estimated versus final NAVs?

Most fund of funds vehicles book estimated values for underlying funds to report on time, then replace them with final values when received. Fundtec records both, calculates the difference and applies the true-up under the fund’s policy, either in the current period or by restating. Every change is logged with its source document so the auditor can trace it.

What is look-through reporting?

Look-through reporting shows the fund’s exposure to underlying positions, strategies, sectors or geographies rather than just its holdings in other funds. Fundtec builds look-through views from underlying manager reports and transparency data where available, and states clearly where data is estimated or not provided by the manager.

How do you value underlying private funds that report late?

Where an underlying private fund reports a quarter in arrears, Fundtec rolls the last reported value forward for capital calls, distributions and known events, following the manager’s valuation policy. When the new statement arrives, the rolled-forward value is compared and adjusted, with the difference documented.

Do you track unfunded commitments to underlying funds?

Yes. Fundtec maintains commitment, contributed and unfunded balances for every underlying fund, reconciled to capital call notices and statements. The team can also prepare call and distribution forecasts so the manager can plan liquidity and avoid over-commitment across vintages, especially when several underlying funds are in their investment periods at once.

Can Fundtec collect documents from underlying administrator portals?

Yes. Document collection is a core part of the service. Fundtec maintains a tracker of every underlying fund, its reporting schedule and portal, retrieves statements and notices as they are issued and chases missing items. Access credentials remain under the client’s control and are granted through the client’s own accounts.

Is fund of funds accounting suitable for family offices?

Yes. Family offices that invest across many external managers face the same issues: lagged statements, estimates, commitments and exposure reporting. Fundtec applies the same fund of funds process to a family office portfolio and can consolidate it with direct holdings, co-investments and operating entities in a single report for the family.
