Strategies
Private equity fund operations from first close to final distribution
Closed-ended funds run on commitments, calls and waterfalls. Fundtec keeps capital accounts, carry and LP reporting accurate across the full life of each fund.
In one minute
Private equity fund operations cover the accounting and investor work behind a closed-ended fund: capital calls and distributions, waterfall and carried interest calculations, GP and management company accounting, portfolio valuation support and LP reporting. Fundtec provides these services for private equity sponsors and their administrators, producing IRR, TVPI, DPI and MOIC metrics and ILPA-aligned reports on Tychi or the client’s systems.
Managers running this strategy who want administration and operations that already understand its accounting, valuation and investor-reporting demands.
A 30-minute scoping call, then a written plan: scope, the transition timeline and indicative pricing. No generic proposal.
What private equity fund accounting involves
A private equity fund raises commitments, not cash. Money arrives through capital calls over an investment period and returns through distributions as portfolio companies are sold or recapitalized. Each LP’s capital account must reflect contributions, allocated income, fees, carry and distributions exactly as the LPA describes.
The hardest parts are rarely daily. They are the events: a subsequent close with equalization interest, a partial exit through the distribution waterfall, a GP clawback test, a fee offset from transaction income. Fundtec models these events once, documents them, and reuses the model every quarter so the numbers LPs receive can be traced to the agreement.

Where Fundtec sits in a private equity fund
Fundtec is the operating partner, not the GP, auditor or legal adviser. We calculate, reconcile and report under the terms the GP and its counsel have set. Where an LPA clause is ambiguous, we document the interpretation, agree it with the GP in writing and apply it the same way every quarter, so LP reporting stays consistent from first close to final distribution.

Ask a specialistFrequently asked questions
Can Fundtec model a private equity distribution waterfall?
Yes. Fundtec builds the waterfall directly from the LPA, whether European (whole-of-fund) or American (deal-by-deal), including return of capital, preferred return, GP catch-up and carried interest split. The model is documented, tested against sample distributions and reused each quarter, and it tracks clawback exposure where the GP has received carry early.
Do you produce ILPA-format reports for LPs?
Yes. Fundtec prepares fee, expense and carried interest disclosures in the layout of the ILPA reporting templates when LPs or the GP request it, alongside standard capital account statements. Data is drawn from the same ledger as the financial statements, so figures reconcile across every report an LP receives.
How are IRR, TVPI, DPI and MOIC calculated for a PE fund?
IRR is calculated on dated cash flows between LPs and the fund plus residual NAV. TVPI divides distributions plus NAV by paid-in capital, DPI uses distributions alone, and MOIC compares value to invested capital at deal level. Fundtec reports gross and net figures and documents the method so auditors and LPs can recompute them.
Do you handle GP and management company accounting as well as the fund?
Yes. Sponsors often want one team to keep the fund, GP entity, carry vehicle and management company books consistent. Fundtec maintains each entity’s ledger, records fee income and carry allocations, allocates shared expenses under the agreed policy and prepares financials for each entity’s auditor.
How do you treat investors who join at a subsequent close?
Late-closing investors contribute their share of prior calls so every LP is funded pro rata to commitment. Fundtec calculates the true-up, any equalization interest owed under the LPA, and the refunds due to earlier LPs, then records each movement in the relevant capital accounts and issues supporting notices.
Can Fundtec support portfolio company valuations?
Fundtec prepares valuation support: roll-forwards, input schedules, comparable data compilation and documentation under the manager’s valuation policy. The valuation conclusion remains the manager’s responsibility and is reviewed by the auditor. Our role is to make the file complete, consistent and ready for committee review.
