Largest fund administrators in the world (2026): who they are and how to choose

The largest fund administrators in the world are the fund services arms of global custody banks, such as BNY, State Street, J.P. Morgan and Northern Trust, and a group of large independents, such as Citco, SS&C, Apex Group and Alter Domus. Size tells you about reach and capacity. It does not tell you which administrator will serve your fund best.

This guide lists the largest fund administration companies by type, explains how rankings are put together and shows how to compare a large firm with a mid-size or technology-led one. If you already know the scope you need, see what fund administration services for private funds cover at Fundtec.

Who are the largest fund administrators in the world?

The firms below appear most often at or near the top of industry rankings by assets under administration, followed by Fundtec as an example of a technology-led administrator. The table is grouped by provider type and is not a ranking. The order in published surveys changes from year to year and depends on how each survey counts assets.

Provider Type Typical focus
BNY Bank-owned (US custody bank) Custody, fund accounting and administration across a very wide range of funds
State Street Bank-owned (US custody bank) Custody, fund accounting and administration, including alternatives
J.P. Morgan Bank-owned (global bank) Custody, fund services and hedge fund administration
Northern Trust Bank-owned (US custody bank) Custody and fund administration, including private markets
BNP Paribas Bank-owned (European bank) Custody, depositary and fund administration, mainly in Europe
Citco Independent, privately owned Hedge fund administration heritage, also private markets
SS&C Technologies Independent, listed technology and services firm Hedge fund and private markets administration alongside its software
Apex Group Independent, grown through acquisitions Fund, corporate and depositary services across many domiciles
Alter Domus Independent Private equity, real estate, infrastructure and private debt
IQ-EQ Independent Fund and corporate services for private markets
Morgan Stanley Fund Services Bank-owned (part of Morgan Stanley) Hedge fund administration
Aztec Group and Ocorian Independent, Jersey origins Private markets fund and corporate services
Fundtec Independent, technology-led (own platform plus a dedicated team) Privately offered hedge, private equity, venture, credit, real estate and digital asset funds; USD 87B+ in assets under service

Below this group sits a long list of mid-size and specialist firms, including US private equity specialists such as Gen II and Standish, and technology-led providers that combine their own platform with a dedicated team, such as Fundtec, which services USD 87B+ in assets for 120+ client partners. For a view of one large provider in particular, see our guide to Apex Group alternatives.

How are fund administrators ranked?

Most rankings come from annual surveys run by trade publications and data providers. Administrators report their own figures, and the survey ranks them. Three things make rankings hard to compare:

  • What counts as assets. Some surveys count every fund an administrator services, including custody-only or middle office mandates. Others count only full fund administrator mandates with NAV calculation.
  • Which funds count. Rankings for hedge funds, private equity and real estate are often separate, and a firm that leads one may be mid-table in another.
  • Double counting. A master fund and its feeders, or a fund that uses two providers for different services, can be counted more than once across the market.

Treat a ranking as a guide to who has scale in your strategy, then look at evidence for your own fund.

Is the largest fund administrator the best choice?

Not by default. Scale brings real strengths, and it brings trade-offs. The right question is which type of provider fits your fund's size, strategy and service needs.

Provider type Strengths Points to test
Bank-owned administrators Balance sheet, custody and banking under one roof, global reach Minimum fees at your size, who works on your account, and what is bundled with custody
Large independents Broad strategy coverage, many domiciles, regulated entities in several of them Team continuity, how a smaller fund is prioritized, add-on charges
Mid-size specialists Depth in one strategy or region Coverage of every domicile and asset type you plan to use
Technology-led administrators Own platform, direct data access, a dedicated team Depth of the team behind the software, controls and references

A USD 2 billion multi-strategy hedge fund with banks as counterparties may value a large firm's custody link. A USD 150 million first-time private equity fund may care more about a named team that knows its LPA and its distribution waterfall.

How do you choose between large and smaller fund administrators?

  1. Write a one-page fund profile. Strategy, structure, domiciles, investor count, NAV frequency and reporting requests.
  2. Shortlist across types. Include at least one large firm and one mid-size or technology-led firm, so you can compare models, not just prices.
  3. Send the same request for proposal. Ask for scope, named team, fee schedule at launch size and at target size, and data access terms.
  4. Run a working session. Ask each candidate to walk through a sample NAV pack and an investor statement for a fund like yours.
  5. Score independently. Use weighted criteria, scored by two people on your side, before comparing notes.
  6. Take references. Speak to funds of a similar size and strategy, not the provider's largest client.
  7. Negotiate the agreement. Fix deliverables, response times, fees and the return of data if you leave.

Our article on how to choose a fund administrator in 2026 sets out ten criteria you can use for the scoring step.

What does a comparison look like in practice?

Here is an illustrative example. A manager launching a USD 250 million Cayman hedge fund with a Delaware feeder scores three candidates out of 5 on four weighted criteria.

Criterion Weight Large bank-owned Large independent Technology-led
Fit for structure and strategy 35% 5 4 4
Named team and responsiveness 25% 3 3 5
Technology and data access 20% 4 3 5
Fees at launch and target size 20% 2 3 4
Weighted score 100% 3.70 3.35 4.45

The large bank-owned firm scores highest on structure, but its minimum fee weighs heavily at launch size. The manager takes references for the top two and asks both to repeat the NAV pack session with its own offering documents before deciding. Every figure here is illustrative.

Where does Fundtec fit?

Fundtec is a technology-led independent administrator, an alternative to the global banks and large consolidators for managers who want a named team and direct access to their data. It administers privately offered hedge, private equity, venture, credit, real estate and digital asset funds with a dedicated team on our proprietary platform, Tychi. It has operated since 2019, works 24/5 and holds ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certifications, with SOC 1 and SOC 2 attestations in progress. Where a domicile requires a licensed administrator or other regulated role, a licensed provider holds that role.

The largest provider is the right choice for some funds and the wrong one for others. To compare like for like, request a fund administration proposal and test it against the large firms on your shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the biggest fund administrators?

The biggest fund administrators by assets under administration are the fund services arms of custody banks, including BNY, State Street, J.P. Morgan and Northern Trust, and large independents such as Citco, SS&C Technologies, Apex Group and Alter Domus. The exact order changes each year and differs between hedge fund, private equity and real estate rankings, so check the latest survey for your strategy.

What are the top 10 fund administration companies in the world?

Lists of the top 10 fund administration companies usually include BNY, State Street, J.P. Morgan, Northern Trust, BNP Paribas, Citco, SS&C Technologies, Apex Group, Alter Domus and IQ-EQ, with firms such as Morgan Stanley Fund Services close behind. Technology-led administrators such as Fundtec are a common alternative for emerging and mid-market managers. The order depends on how each survey counts assets and which funds it includes, so treat any top 10 as indicative.

Is a bigger fund administrator better?

A bigger fund administrator brings capacity, reach and often custody or banking in the same group. It is not automatically better for your fund. Smaller and technology-led firms can offer a named team, faster responses and lower minimum fees. Compare providers on fit for your structure, team, data access and fees, using a sample NAV pack and references.

What is the difference between a fund administrator and a custodian?

A fund administrator keeps the fund's books independently, calculates the NAV, maintains investor records and prepares financial statements. A custodian holds the fund's assets in safekeeping and settles trades. Some large banks offer both, but they are separate roles, and many funds use different firms for each. Fundtec is an administrator and does not hold client assets.

Which fund administrators work well with emerging managers?

Emerging managers often get more attention from mid-size and technology-led administrators, such as Fundtec, whose minimum fees and service models suit first and second funds. Large administrators also serve emerging managers, usually with higher minimums. Compare at least one of each type. Our buyer's guide to fund administrators for emerging and mid-market managers sets out a full selection process.
